Assembly and testing of a 5-axis CNC writing system for micro patterning

This project consists of the assembly and testing of a high-precision 5-axis CNC writing system for the laser manufacturing of micro-patterns on 3D printed samples. The project offers an excellent opportunity to become proficient with 5-axis CNC technology. You will work closely with other students and staff members at Heriot-Watt University, within the framework of a funded project that includes a British multinational which is a global leader in measurement, motion control, and manufacturing, as well as healthcare and spectroscopy. The core group at Heriot-Watt University has developed a process to write metallic tracks with light on plastic substrates. This enables the creation of metallic micro-patterns in some of the most-used materials for flexible electronics. Your task will be to complete the assembly of a small 5-axis CNC system in order to precisely pattern complex 3D printed samples. After the system is completed, it will be tested to pattern on different structures for fabrication of tailored circuitry. Although the project is eminently industrial, there is scope for scientific publication in light of the results.
