Compact broadband mid-infrared sources

The aim of this project is to develop a broadband mid-infrared (MIR) source via exploiting nonlinear-photonics techniques in silicon waveguides. Recent work has highlighted the potential of emitting narrowband MIR in these waveguides by enabling a coherent supercontinuum process, which is a nonlinear optical interaction that leads to frequency conversion over a large range. Tapering these waveguides could be used as an additional degree of freedom to broaden the output spectra in the MIR region. In this project, we aim to investigate this effect using MATLAB and COMSOL software packages.
