Modelling Gas Flows in Porous Media using new Continuum Approach in OpenFOAM (2015-16)

Shale (natural) gas emits less environmentally harmful pollutants per unit of energy produced relative to other fossil fuels and it is in abundant supply. BP predicts that shale gas will show the fastest production growth (6.5% p.a.) over the next 20 years, with North America currently dominating global supply, accounting for 99% of production. Efficient natural gas production relies on good understanding of the fluid mechanics in porous media. This project consists of developing numerical tools in OpenFOAM to understand gas flow structures in porous media.
