Review of solar energy for use in industrial applications.

Application of solar thermal energy in industrial processes is currently limited. This project will involve data gathering to establish the demand for thermal energy by temperature range and industrial sector. The student will also survey available collector technologies and their potential for meeting some of this demand. Several industrial processes will be selected and promising solar technologies investigated. The final report will include an estimate of the potential for solar energy use in industry globally, a summary of the hurdles which must be overcome to meet this potential and detailed analysis of three or more industrial processes, associated solar thermal technologies and the technical and financial developments which would be necessary to make application of solar thermal energy attractive in these processes.
