MULTIMODE PHOTONICS: FROM OPTICAL FIBRES TO ON-CHIP WAVEGUIDES

Wed, 17/10/2018 - 14:30

Location:

Speaker:
M Guasoni
Affiliation:
University of Southampton
Synopsis:

Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in multimode fibres. The ability to control the propagation and interaction of different modes in these fibres opens the way to novel applications in several areas, from optical communications, to astronomy, to high-power lasers, just to name a few. This seminar will review the main challenges and advantages of the multimode platform with respect to the conventional single-mode technology. Moreover, it will discuss some recent ideas and exciting perspectives related to the interaction between several modes in on-chip waveguides, where the study of the multimode dynamics is still on its infancy.
