Synopsis:

Catalytic Solutions for Global Challenges

Heterogeneous catalysts will play a vital role in the transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy and will have a great impact in the development of sustainable societies in the near future. In this scenario, this talk will present an overview of the current research at the University of Surrey dealing with advanced heterogeneous catalysts for energy and environmental applications. In particular, we will present our approach towards the design of highly efficient systems for clean H2 production, microchannel reactors for process intensification and new catalysts and alternative routes for heavy oil upgrading. Finally we will discuss our latest advances in the urgent area of chemical CO2 recycling using highly efficient multicomponent catalysts.

Biography:

Dr Tomas Ramirez Reina obtained his PhD (Cum Laude) at the University of Seville (Spain) where he specialised in heterogeneous catalysis for energy applications. He has worked in several world-leading institutions including the Brookhaven National Laboratory (NY, USA) the Institute of Chemical Engineering (Patras, Greece) and the Chemical Engineering Department at Imperial College London. Currently, Dr Reina is a Lecturer in Chemical Engineering and the leader of the Catalysis Unit at the University of Surrey.
Dr Reina’s research in catalysis has been recognised by the international community with several awards, including the EFCATS (European Federation of Catalysis Societies) award in 2013, the Spanish Society of Catalysis award, the extraordinary PhD award by the University of Seville and the Young Scientist of the Year 2017 by Seville city council. He has been also finalist of the prestigious IChemE award in 2016 and 2017 in the category of Young Academic Researcher. He has co-authored more than 50 peer-review papers in high impact factor journals (including for example Chemical Reviews I.F:52.6), 3 book chapters, and 4 patents. He also has more than 50 conference contributions including invited plenaries and keynotes in international congresses. Currently, he is the Principal Investigator of the several projects sponsored by the EPSRC and the Royal Society in area of heterogeneous catalysis for energy and environmental applications.
