Coherent optical information processing has been a tantalising proposition for over 50 years. Due to the physical constraints of the optical systems and the limitations of optical-digital interfaces, its use has largely been restricted to niche military and academic interest. Now, through the patented Optalysys approach and IP, coupled with the recent developments from the display and film industries, the technology can for the first time be offered in a commercially viable format, providing the huge benefits of parallel analogue processing to deep learning applications. Optalysys optical co-processors use low power laser light, rather than electricity, to perform processor intensive, high resolution correlation and convolution functions in parallel at incredibly high speeds, yet taking only a fraction of the energy used by electronic processors. The goal is to provide solutions to the biggest challenges facing silicon computing as it applies to high resolution Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications.
Optalysys CEO Dr Nick New is a renowned world expert in optical pattern recognition. He developed the forerunner to the Optalysys technology whilst carrying out his PhD on optical pattern recognition at Cambridge University. Dr New went on to forge relationships with international academic and commercial institutions before securing funding to take Optalysys forward.
