Towards High-Performance Wireless Control in 5G and Beyond

Synopsis: 

In 5G and beyond, high-performance wireless control is one of the essential features to enable many emerging applications, e.g., remote robotics, industrial automation, self-driving vehicles and drones, remote surgery and healthcare, and smart grid. Unfortunately, the performance of today’s wireless control systems is lagging far behind in their ability to support these applications. This talk first discusses the fundamental reason behind the big gap between high communication requirements from control systems and existing solutions from communication systems. Then we compare the difference between data communication system and information update system, where the latter is for wireless control. Next, we provide examples to demonstrate the importance of considering both control and communication parameters in system design. Finally, our latest results and prototypes will be shown in this talk.

Biography: 

Dr. Liying (Emma) Li received her B.E. and Ph.D. Degrees from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) in 2005 and 2011, both in Electrical Engineering. She visited Georgia Institute of Technology, GA, USA, in 2008-2010 and Lehigh University, PA, USA, in 2016. In 2011-2019, she worked as an associate professor in School of Automation Engineering, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). Now she is a research associate in School of Engineering at University of Glasgow, UK. Dr. Li has published more than 39 peer-reviewed, multi-disciplinary research articles in top-tiered journals and conferences, including 11 IEEE Transaction papers and 9 patents. Her research work has been cited more than 520 times according to Google Scholar and one was awarded as Highly Cited paper according to Thomson Reuters 2015-2018. Her research interests are within the areas of wireless communications, control, smart grid, and data science.
