Synopsis: 

As a new academic member of EPS, it is important to create new links and explore further ways of collaboration within the school. With this goal in mind, in this talk I intend to review my previous experience in the area of Machine Learning. The presentation will cover a varied range of topics such as planning optimisation, agent-based systems, time series analysis and the development of medical classificators using mainly Evolutionary Algorithms and Deep Learning. I will explore my contributions to the project "A Multiobjective Evolutionary Approach to Understanding Parkinson's Disease" and how Deep Learning can be applied to the diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease in the recent submitted paper “Parkinson’s Disease Diagnosis using Convolutional Neural Networks and Figure-copying Tasks”. Finally, I will speak about my role in the Proteus project, an EPSRC Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration with the University of Edinburgh and Bath University.

Biography: 

Dr Marta Vallejo is a tenure track Research Fellow in Biomedical Signal and Image Processing at Heriot-Watt University. She holds a PhD in computational intelligence and predictive modelling and has worked on several research projects in the areas of deep learning, machine learning and predictive modelling with a particular focus on neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's Disease. She is currently involved in the Proteus project, where she applies machine learning techniques to biomedical image. Previous to her current position, Dr Vallejo worked as an analyst and project manager on several EU research projects in Spain, and more recently, she was the head of AI and Machine Learning at ClearSky Medical Diagnostics Ltd.
