As academics we work as a team in a collegiate manner. Sometimes we end up managing our peers and sometimes we end up being managed by them. This often works well but it can also lead to problems with performance management. This session will discuss strategies to avoid problems with performance management, where you can provide support and what happens if its not easily resolved. This can be useful for management of a postdoc or Professor! The session is interactive, so please bring your ideas
Vicki Stone is Professor of Toxicology at Heriot-Watt University where she is Deputy Executive Dean in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences. She is an Honorary Principal Scientist at the Institute of Occupational Medicine, a member of the UK REACH Independent Scientific Expert Pool (RISEP) and the Scottish Chemicals Policy Network. She was Editor-in-chief of Nanotoxicology (2006-2011), and was recognised by Clarivate Analytics as one of the top 1% of researchers in Pharmacology and Toxicology (2015-2019). Vicki held the Royal Society of Chemistry Toxicology Award (2015-16), and has been working on their Environment, Sustainability and Energy Award Division Prize Committee for four years. She has also been appointed to the MRC ITTP Steering Committee (2023).
Vicki’s research focuses on the toxicology of particles and nanomaterials, including understanding their mode of action. She coordinated the EU project GRACIOUS Home | Gracious (h2020gracious.eu) which developed a Framework to support the grouping and read-across of nanomaterials. Vicki is leading an OECD working group to update international guidance on grouping and read-across and is participating in an regulatory project (European Chemicals Agency) to gather evidence to support potential implementation of elements of GRACIOUS into REACH. Vicki has also worked with several companies (e.g. GSK, Smart Separations, Unilever and Kingspan) to support industrial research questions.
