Synopsis:

With an ageing population, healthcare monitoring in smart homes is becoming increasingly important. However, conventional respiratory monitoring often relies on wearable or contact-based devices, which may be inconvenient for long-term daily use. With advances in Internet of Things (IoT) and wireless communication technologies, Wi-Fi sensing offers a promising contactless alternative. By extracting Channel State Information (CSI) from commodity Wi-Fi devices, subtle signal variations caused by human breathing can be captured. In this seminar, we will introduce our recent work on Wi-Fi-based respiratory monitoring, including how CSI responds to breathing motion and how breathing pauses affect respiratory sensing from a theoretical perspective. Experimental results with an estimation accuracy of over 87% highlight the potential of commodity Wi-Fi for contactless healthcare monitoring.
