Relays have been used to enhance the efficiency and reliability of wireless communication systems.
Multi-way relay network (MWR), where multiple users exchange messages with the help of a relay, has been an active research subject in recent years. In a multi-way relay network operating in half-duplex mode (such as time-division), the data exchange is generally accomplished in two transmission phases: the multiple access (MA) phase where all the users air their messages to the relay and the broadcast (BC) phase where the relay broadcasts all the content (possibly via superimposing coding) back to all the users. The goal is for each user to exchange information with all other users. In our work, we consider the half-duplex MWR model with signal alignment. Unlike previous analysis, our work considers the more general case of K(≥2) users (each equipped with M antennas) and a relay (equipped with N antennas). Both the cut-set outer bound and DF inner bound is utilized to derive the DoF. It is shown that the maximum DoF of the MWR is min{M,N}/[2(K−1)] , and the DoF of DF relaying is 1/2 min{KM/(K−1) ,N}, for arbitrary settings of M,N and K≥2. Using the technology of zero-forcing signal alignment and successive interference cancellation, a DF scheme is further proposed to provide a practical and efficient mechanism for the K-user MWR (K≥2).

Biography: 

Qingchun Chen received his B.Sc degree and his M.Sc degree with honor from Chongqing University, P.R. China, in 1994 and 1997, respectively. He received his Ph.D. degree in Transportation Information Engineering and Control from Southwest Jiaotong University, P.R. China in 2004. He was with Jimei Maritime University (Now Jimei University) from 1997 to 1998, and Shenzhen High-Tech Park (HTP) Telecommunication Company from 1998 to 1999. He joined Southwest Jiaotong University since 2004 as an associate professor and then as a full professor since 2009. He visited City University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as research fellow and research associate in 2004 and 2005, respectively. From 2009-2010, he visited Harvard University sponsored by CSC (China Scholarship Council). Dr. Chen received the excellent Ph.D. dissertation award by SWJTU and Sichuan Province in 2004 and 2005, respectively. In 2006, he was the recipient of the Program for New Century Excellent Talent in University, Ministry of Education, P.R. China. He was also the recipient of Fok Ying Tong selected research funding for Outstanding Young Teacher in Colleges and Universities in 2005. Research work led by Dr. Qingchun Chen was supported by the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Ministry of Education (MOE) of China, the Sichuan Province, and industrial fundings. Qingchun Chen has authored and coauthored over 70 research papers, two book chapters and 12 Chinese patents. He is now the senior member of IEEE and the vice chair of the IEEE CDS VT chapter. Dr. Chen’s research interests include Wireless Communication & Wireless Network, Information Theory & Coding, Wireless Sensor Network and Signal Processing & Its Application.
