Markets and Opportunities for Hydrogen & Fuel Cells’

Wed, 02/04/2014 - 16:00 to 17:00

Location:

Speaker:
Mr Nigel Holmes
Affiliation:
Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association
Synopsis:

This seminar will outline the growing markets for both hydrogen and fuel cell technologies into key global market sectors. Highly efficient fuel cells are growing rapidly in stationary power applications including CHP and distributed power, driven by fuel cell cost reduction and steadily rising energy costs. The transport sector is now seeing very significant interest in the deployment of hydrogen as a clean fuel, with Hyundai already selling the ix35 FCEV and further models from Toyota and Honda coming to market in 2015.
The seminar will also consider the opportunities for use of Hydrogen at a large scale, and in particular linked to the deployment of Renewables in Scotland. This will highlight distributed ‘green hydrogen’ production, the links to road and marine transport, and the increasingly important role for hydrogen in renewables load balancing. The key enabling role of Hydrogen will be considered both for small scale community projects, but also at the much larger grid scale. This links into recent UK work on grid-gas which is developing our understanding of hydrogen injection into the natural gas transmission and distribution networks as part of a trajectory towards the use of lower carbon heat.

Biography:

Nigel Holmes : Chief Executive of the Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (SHFCA)
Nigel is CEO of the Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (SHFCA), the trade association for development and deployment of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in Scotland. Since joining SHFCA as CEO he has doubled its membership, and SHFCA is now one of the most rapidly growing Hydrogen and Fuel Cell membership organisations in the world. Now with over 70 members SHFCA is also widely recognised as ‘the most active hydrogen and fuel cell association in Europe’.
Hydrogen and Fuel Cell technologies are playing an increasingly important role in helping businesses to reduce their overall carbon footprint. Early deployment areas include the use of fuel cells for combined heat and power (CHP), and material logistics using hydrogen fork lift trucks. The next few years will begin to see the wider deployment of fuel cell transport using hydrogen from renewables as a ‘zero carbon & zero emission’ fuel. Innovative uses of hydrogen technologies are generating considerable interest in the rapidly growing ‘Cleantech’ sector, and will complement Scotland’s leading deployment of Renewables.
Nigel is also the Deputy Chair for the Transport sub-Group of Scotland’s 2020 Climate Group, represents SHFCA interests on the Renewable Industry Advisory Group (RIAG), and is a steering group member for both the Scottish Transport Emissions Partnership (STEP) and Green Business Fife.
