Microwave-induced hyperthermia in cancer research

Wed, 10/09/2014 - 13:00

Location:

Speaker:
Ms. Theodora Matso (SLS), Ms. Maria-Jesus Canavate-Sanchez (EPS), Dr. Heiko Gimperlein (MACS)
Affiliation:
HWU
Synopsis:

This seminar is dedicated to present the progress of an ongoing interdisciplinary project related to the effect of hyperthermia in cancer therapeutics. It comprises of three talks:
• Ms. Theodora Matso from the School of Life Sciences will describe her progress on the use of an experimental platform of hyperthermia in an in vitro model of human malignant melanoma
• Ms. Maria-Jesus Canavate-Sanchez of the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences will present her work on the development of a dedicated microwave platform with a closed temperature control loop for inducing hyperthermia in cancer research
• Heiko Gimperlein and David Stark from the School of Mathematics and Computer Science will report on their progress in the finite element modelling of the heat distribution in hyperthermia experiments. They particularly address opportunities for a closer exchange with experimentalists and some unsuspected challenges of the problem
