*CANCELLED* ISSS PhD/RA seminar - will be rescheduled

Thu, 28/01/2016 - 11:15 to 13:15

Location:

Speaker:
Various
Affiliation:
Heriot-Watt University
Synopsis:

The next informal ISSS PhD/RA seminar will be on Thursday January 28th with free pizza to follow. Please indicate intended attendance to r.h.baxter@hw.ac.uk by 12-noon Tuesday for catering purposes.

This month our 'bit different' slot will be filled by Kartic Subr who was appointed as an associate professor in ISSS in 2014. He will be talking about his experiences applying for jobs an both academia and industry, focusing on his Royal Society fellowship and sharing his tips for building a successful fellowship application.

Our technical talk will be from ISSS PhD candidate Alessandro Borgia who will be presenting work from his first year viva on deep learning for wide-area surveillance.

Full details below:
Talk 1: Alessandro Borgia - ISSS PhD

Title: A deep learning strategy for wide-area surveillance

An unsolved issue in people tracking in multiple non--overlapping cameras is how to deal with targets disappearing for extended periods of time. This research aims at defining a strategy to tackle the long
total occlusions problem by proposing a unified framework for the tracking process and a deep-learning based re-identification scheme: an iterative adaptive interaction is created between these two tasks, the effect of which is to boost each other, thus enabling more powerful tracking capabilities in presence of disappearing targets.

Talk 2: Dr Kartic Subr - ISSS Associate Professor and University Research Fellow

Title: Landing the right job: h-index vs $$$

I will explain my experiences, in different countries, applying for jobs in both academia as well as in companies. In particular, I will focus on my current fellowship (Royal Society University Research Fellowship -
https://royalsociety.org/grants-schemes-awards/grants/university-research/) and highlight what I think would be useful tips towards building a successful fellowship application.

Bio

I am an associate professor and University Research Fellow in EPS. Before joining Heriot Watt University, I was a post-doctoral researcher at Disney Research (2013-2014), in Edinburgh. Prior to my position at
Disney Research, I was a Royal Society's Newton International Fellow (2011-2013), and an Honorary Research Associate at the dept of Computer Science, University College London. Between 2008 and 2010 I was a
post-doctoral researcher at INRIA-Grenoble (France). I obtained my Ph.D. at the University of California, Irvine in June, 2008 under the guidance of Jim Arvo. My thesis explored different sampling strategies for Monte
Carlo light transport. During my PhD, I did summer internships at Rhythm and Hues Studios (LA, 2007), NVIDIA corporation (Santa Clara 2006) and a teaching position at Columbia University (NY 2007). Before entering my
Master's degree (completed 2005) I worked at Hewlett Packard. In my previous life, I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (2001) and Engineering from Bangalore University, India.

Where: EM 2.33

When: Thursday 28th – 11:15 - 13:15 (30-40 min of talks then free pizza)

About this seminar series:

This is a regular series for ISSS PhDs/RAs to present information about what we do in an informal setting and to hear about something ‘a bit different’. Suggested topics for the 'bit different' talk are always welcome, as are volunteers for the technical talk.
