Synopsis:

Electrical contact failure is the main form of connector degradation. Environmental vibration, temperature change, contamination are the main factors to lead to the failure. When electrical connectors are in the dynamic environments, fretting or small distance motion will be produced between the interfaces of contact pair. Fretting wear and fretting corrosion of contact interface occur simultaneously during micro-motion. The fretting can induce chemical and topographical changes and the formation of oxide particles. At the same time, serious contamination formed on contact surface is one of the main causes of electrical contact failure. These contaminations may be due to surface oxidation, dust deposition and corrosion of contact material. When contaminations are deposited on the plating, they may enhance the corrosion and also cause high contact resistance.
