The presentation introduce the recent research on CO2 chemical absorption, adsorption and utilization in Institute of Thermal Power Engineering of Zhejiang University. The research on chemical absorption covers solvent development, membrane vacuum regeneration and direct steam regeneration to realize low energy consumption. The adsorption research covers carbon based sorbent and adsorbent based on amine functional group for air capture. We also make research on CO2 fixation by algae’,

Associate Professor Tao Wang ‘Direct CO2 Capture from Ambient Air: An approach to accelerate the CO2 utilization’
Carbon dioxide capture directly from ambient air (air capture) is an emerging technology to stabilize the CO2 level in atmosphere. A novel cycling process for CO2 capture, moisture swing adsorption, will be introduced in this presentation. The anionic exchange resin based sorbent binds CO2 when dry and releases it when wet which enables the utilization of low grade energy for CO2 separation at ultra-low concentration. The interaction of H2O-CO2-ions at the interface of sorbent is the key mechanism which is revealed by both experiments and molecular simulation.

Biography: 

Prof. Mengxiang Fang, Born in 1965. He got his PhD degree in Zhejiang University in 1991. Now he is a full professor and PhD supervisor of the Institute for Thermal Power Engineering of Zhejiang University. His research covers: coal and biomass combustion and gasification, CO2 emission control. He has already finished more than 30 projects as coordinate. He participated several international cooperation projects on CCS —such as Cooperation Action within CCS China-EU (COACH) and China-UK Near Zero Emissions Coal(NZEC). In addition, he successfully completed a CO2 capture project using membrane absorption technology fund by Hi-Tech Research and Development Program of China. Now, he is also presiding several CO2 chemical absorption project using novel absorption process supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China. He got 10 patents and presented more than 100 papers in Journal and conference.
Associate Professor Tao Wang is active in the research area of direct CO2 capture from air. He received his BS in Thermal Power Engineering from Zhejiang University in 1998 and continued at Zhejiang to earn his PhD in Power Engineering and Engineering Theromophysics in 2008. From 2012-2013, Dr. Tao Wang worked at Columbia University as a postdoctoral fellow worked with Prof. Klaus Lackner on air capture technology.
