Synopsis:

Quantum technology promises to give us faster computation, secure communication, and ultra-precise metrology. All of this makes use of some very fragile resources, such as coherence and entanglement in quantum states. Recently, there has been work on how to best quantify such fragile resources, using techniques that naturally allow us to use efficient optimisation techniques. These techniques also makes it possible to relate the resources to “quantum” tasks such as metrology. I will review some recent results in a number of cases, including, but not limited to, entanglement, asymmetry in quantum states, and coherence.
