Hypersonic and Rocketry group

Mon, 05/06/2023 - 14:00 to 15:00

Location:

Speaker:
Dr Fabian Zander
Affiliation:
University of Southern Queensland (Australia)
Synopsis:

The UniSQ hypersonics and rocketry group is a rapidly expanding research group with unique experimental capabilities. Within the group we have Australia’s only long duration hypersonic test facility, access to Australia’s only commercial rocket static test site for research projects, specialised co-design tools for hypersonic vehicle development, and a unique airborne observation capability with advanced diagnostics. Additionally, UniSQ is also the lead on the iLAuNCH program, a $180m project for accelerating university research into commercial realities for space applications. This talk will give an overview of our activities, focusing on the hypersonic testing and airborne observation capabilities.

Should you wish to meet with the speaker during his visit (from 5-7th June) please contact Dr Michael Crichton -m.crichton@hw.ac.uk.

Biography:

A/Prof. Fabian Zander is an aerospace engineering graduate from the University of Queensland (PhD, 2013). Following a 5 year Post-Doc position in the High Enthalpy Flow Diagnostics Group at the University of Stuttgart he joined the University of Southern Queensland in 2018. Since then he has helped grow the group from 4 members up to the 15 currently, with more coming on board shortly. A/Prof. Zander leads the diagnostic team within the group, and in particular is the lead on the airborne observation projects. This includes leading the Hayabusa2 capsule re-entry observation in 2020 (the first, civilian non-NASA capsule observation) and an international team of researchers on the Tau-Herculids meteor shower observation in the USA in 2022.
