Location:

Speaker:
Eddie Ball
Affiliation:
University of Sheffield
Synopsis:

My area of research is primarily focused on RF engineering and hardware, including IC design. In this talk an overview of measurement capabilities offered at the university of Sheffield's UKRI National mmwave measurement facility (nmmf) will be presented. This will be followed by some recent activities in RF and mmwave circuit and system research currently being performed on my UKRI future leaders fellowship. I will focus on recent activities and findings in time modulated array (TMA) design at 73 GHz, also mixers, oscillators and tunable SIW resonators at 73 GHz. Finally I will mention propagation measurement systems at 28 GHz. These are ongoing areas of research in my fellowship, also hosted within the nmmf.

Biography:

Eddie Ball has 20 years industrial experience in advanced radio circuit and system design, having worked at Cambridge Consultants (Principal Engineer) and Tunstall Healthcare (Radio System Architect). In November 2015 he joined the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Sheffield, where he now works as Reader in RF Engineering and is also a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow (investigating future mmWave Transceivers). He is also the director of the UKRI National mmWave Measurement Laboratory, also at Sheffield. His research interests cover all areas of radio technology: from RF system design, RF circuit design (sub-GHz to mmWave), signal processing, and the application of radio technology to real-world industrial and commercial problems. He has a particular passion for RF hardware design.
