We are excited to announce the next lecture in the series "Navigating Beyond the Thesis: Exploring Career Horizons for Postgraduate Students." This series aims to provide PhD students with invaluable insights into the diverse career paths available after completing their degrees.
In each session, we will host external speakers who have successfully transitioned into various sectors, including Industry, Academia, Clinical fields, Government Agencies, Consulting, Entrepreneurship, Education and Training, Non-profits, and NGOs. Our goal is to inspire and equip you with a broader understanding of your career options, helping you make informed decisions about your future.
We are thrilled to announce that the seventh lecture will be given by Dr Clara Orofino Peña– Patent Director, HGF Ltd. In her talk, “A career in Patent Law", Dr. Orofino will share her career journey in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the fields of pharmaceuticals, process chemistry, materials chemistry, textiles, alternative proteins, batteries and fuel cells, surfactants, medical devices and other mechanical devices and offer insights into the patent laws relevant to variety of technologies.

Clara studied Chemistry at the University of the Basque Country and came to Scotland under the Erasmus exchange programme in her final year. She graduated from both Strathclyde University and the University of the Basque Country and went on to do a PhD in Materials Chemistry at Strathclyde University. After her studies she joined the patent profession at Marks and Clerk LLP and subsequently moved to HGF Limited. Clara is a qualified European Patent Attorney and Chartered UK Patent Attorney with over 12 years of experience and she works with a range of clients, from multinationals to sole inventors and universities. In her spare time, Clara enjoys spending time with her three children, listening to (and attempting to) play music and cycling.
