Active alignment limits the widespread commercial adoption of edge-coupled direct laser written waveguides in glass due to the additional cost and yield loss it adds to the packaging stage of device fabrication. Here, it is shown how active alignment of edge-coupled devices can be overcome by writing in-situ directly in glass already packaged into the final device through a scheme combining device architecture, alignment techniques and adaptive optics-enhanced fabrication. The performance and fabrication characteristic of the edge-written waveguides is compared with conventionally written waveguides. The waveguides demonstrate extremely high throughputs and refractive index control, allowing this scheme to be adopted widely for PIC packaging solutions.
