Beams of light structured in their polarization and phase degrees of freedom possess rich topological properties that can be exploited to encode and manipulate information in optical systems. This talk will provide a short introduction to optical skyrmions and hopfions as emergent topological structures for communication and information storage applications. The importance of geometric representations, beyond Poincaré spheres, for high dimensional optical modes will also be discussed.
