EPS PGR Christmas Lecture: Human Selves / Robot Selves

Thu, 18/12/2014 - 14:00 to 16:00
Speaker:
Prof Tony Prescott
Affiliation:
Sheffield University
Synopsis:

What is the self? Combining perspectives from philosophy, psychology and artificial intelligence, and using insights from research on biomimetics robotics and immersive virtual reality, I will try to show how these new technologies are helping us to answer age-old questions about who we are. The talk will address questions such as: What is the human self? Could a robot have a self? Do I need a body in order to have a self? Could I project my self into another body? Would it be useful or dangerous to create a robot with a sense of self?

The lecture will take place 2pm-3pm with a drinks reception directly after.

Please RSVP to pgr.eps@hw.ac.uk by 12th December if you wish to attend.

With his collaborators he has developed a variety of biomimetic robotic systems, including the whiskered robots Scratchbot and Shrewbot, exploration strategies and autobiographical memory systems for the humanoid iCub robot, and wearable sensory substitution systems that exploit haptic interfaces. He is also a director of the robotics startup company Consequential Robotics which is developing novel assistive and companion robots.
