Chemistry and Climate Change: Perspectives on Decarbonisation

Wed, 26/10/2022 - 19:00 to 20:30

Location:

Speaker:
Dr Laura Bastianini, Dr Isobel Marr, Prof. Thomas Wagner
Synopsis:

Chemistry and Climate Change: Perspectives on Decarbonisation. This event will take place at Summerhall Cairns Lecture Theatre 1, Summerhall, Newington, EH9 1PL. Those wishing to attend should register for a free ticket via Eventbrite. There will be three speakers followed by a panel discussion on the topic of decarbonisation and how it relates to chemistry and climate change.

Decarbonisation is a popular term and is used to quickly describe the concept of reducing and then stopping the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2), an important greenhouse gas that is leading to global warming and climate change. Behind this term is a larger picture of interconnectedness between sources of CO2, the industries and societies that emit CO2 and the potential solutions to this issue. This event will explore decarbonisation and how chemistry plays an important role in both the production and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. You will hear from several speakers about decarbonisation, including industrial projects to reduce the emissions of CO2, the people that are involved in these projects and the wider implications to society and our world. After three 15-minute talks there will be an opportunity to ask questions of the speakers as part of a panel discussion. Afterwards, there will be opportunities to chat further and make new contacts.
