Synopsis:

Catherine Hill will be defending her PhD thesis ‘Optimising Inertial Focusing for High Concentration Processing: Application to Microalgal Dewatering’. Abstract below:

Microalgal harvesting is an area which introduces several issues for the widespread industrial application of algal biotechnology. This is due to the inherently high energy requirements of existing technology and limitations of their application caused by microalgal cells small size and dilute culture. This presentation outlines the application of inertial focusing microfluidic devices as an alternative to existing harvesting technology for the dewatering of small cell diameter microalgal cultures.
