Wed, 15/11/2023 - 13:30 to 14:30

Location:

Speaker:
Prof Ian Megson and Prof Alastair Kean
Affiliation:
UHI
Synopsis:

Profs Megson and Kean from the University of the Highlands and Islands will present an overview of the capabilities relating to Medical Nanotechnology now available in the new Life Sciences Innovation Centre at Inverness Campus. Prof Megson has a background in cardiovascular science and will highlight his experience in nanotoxicology, with a specific focus on the measurement of eicosanoids by mass spectrometry as highly sensitive markers of the inflammogenicity of nanomaterials in cell culture and in vivo. In addition, he will outline his work over the past 15 years on nanoporous materials for storage and controlled release of nitric oxide for use in medical devices. Prof Kean is a physicist with expert knowledge of nanosurfaces and photonics. His presentation will outline our newly acquired capability to deliver nanocoatings to surfaces using physical vapour deposition. These coatings provide unique physical and chemical characteristics capable of imparting antimicrobial properties to the surface, either alone, or through activation by laser light. Prof Kean will also refer to our hyperspectral imaging and Raman spectroscopy capabilities.
