We present a novel, simple and inexpensive super-resolution imaging technique, called translational microscopy (TRAM), in which a super-resolution image is restored from multiple low-resolution observations of a conventional microscope whilst translating the sample parallel to the image plane. It can be implemented with any microscopes and result in a 7-fold increase in lateral spatial resolution in noisy biological environments, delivering multi-colour image resolution of <40 nm.
