Hyperthermal chemistry

Thu, 27/03/2014 - 16:15 to 17:15

Location:

Speaker:
Prof. George Schatz - International RSC prize winner
Affiliation:
Northwestern University
Synopsis:

This talk provides an overview of the field of hyperthermal chemistry, in which atoms or molecules are prepared in the gas phase with energies on the order of an electron volt, and then collide with other gaseous molecules or with liquid or solid surfaces. This leads to interesting chemical reactions which in many cases are not known in thermal kinetics studies, even at combustion temperatures. The use of theory and simulations to describe these processes will be described, along with a number of applications relevant to space science or materials processing.
