Synopsis:

The art of brewing has been practiced for many thousands of years, in Scotland there is archaeological evidence for brewing going back 6000 years both in Fife and on the Isle of Rhum. Other than the contribution as a foodstuff and to health, as at one time it was safer to drink beer than water, the wider contribution of brewing to the fields of science and engineering are not as well known.
The main components of the brewing process include malted barley, hops and yeast. The contribution of these ingredients and the brewing process to the consumer experience will be explored.
