Big Ideas - Brainstorming University wide opportunities to support the UK government post Brexit when dealing with regulations of chemicals, nanomaterials and pharmaceuticals

A range of European regulations govern the manufacture, distribution and use of chemicals, nanomaterials and pharmaceuticals. Currently the UK is often involved at a minimal level in the development of such regulations. Post Brexit the UK government will either have to adopt and retain EU regulations unchanged, generate brand new regulations or modify regulations with time. All three options will require the UK government to have a greater involvement in understanding the regulations and the scientific, political, legal and social factors on which the regulations are based. Civil servants will require support to achieve this goal.
Could Heriot-Heriot Watt generate a project bringing together chemists, material scientists, toxicologists, risk assessors, psychologists, actuarial scientists and communications experts to generate a framework to provide such support?
IB3 NanoSafety projects are already working with the European Chemicals Agency to generate a framework to streamline the risk assessment of nanomaterials for regulatory purposes. The same framework helps industry in decision making process for product development from concept through to market.
This seminar is an opportunity to brainstorm the types of partners that might be needed for such a project, the collaborators, the government links required and the funding opportunities.
