Is there life in the fermenter?

Detection of the presence of life on Mars has proven difficult - but the measurement of life in a fermentation broth should be much easier. In practice, this is surprisingly difficult. In this talk I will discuss some of the problems encountered when trying the measure cell concentrations and cell viability during fermentation, and what this can tell us about the fermentation process.
