The bulk degradation of portions of the cell under stress conditions appears self-cannibalistic and in conflict with attempts at survival. At closer inspection however, this process - known as ‘autophagy’ – is essential for cell health and survival. With well-established links to tumourigenesis, neurodegenerative disorders and protection against infection, the process of autophagy has been extensively researched. In this talk I will discuss how advanced imaging techniques have allowed me to begin to understand the structure of an autophagosome and how proteins are regulating autophagy.
