Low biomarker level and variations in sample collection, transport and preparation represent some of the major limitations met by diagnostic technologies. This results in low and slow new technology adoption rate and poor test reliability. Sample preparation in particular has been recognised as a major bottleneck in the translation of biosensors from research to commercial adoption. To circumvent these limitations integrated sample preparation is recommended but hides many challenges. Using as a base unit a blood plasma separation microfluidic chip, my group is exploring opportunities in areas where rapid biomarkers extraction is crucial, and moving towards the development of miniaturised and integrated sample preparation platforms for clinical settings.
