Johnson Matthey Edinburgh is one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical suppliers of controlled substances. Active pharmaceutical ingredients such as morphine, pholcodine, diprenorphine and cocaine are produced in the Gorgie site in Edinburgh. The 200 year history of the company will be covered; which has transformed from a small, family-run apothecary in Edinburgh started in 1815, to being part of Johnson Matthey, a global chemical company in 2017.
As a development chemist, my role varies between supporting the production facilities on site, to developing new or improved synthetic routes to our products. This will be discussed, along with impact on the wider company and its product line.
Throughout my talk I will try to highlight how my undergraduate and PhD studies at Heriot Watt University have supported and enabled me to reach this position within Johnson Matthey Edinburgh.
